Desktop PC Recycling Services in the UK

Towers, All-in-Ones, Workstations and the Monitors That Come With Them — Free UK Collection, Secure Data Wipe, Zero to Landfill

Desktop PCs are the quiet problem in most UK offices. They’re heavier than laptops, harder to lift out of the corner under a desk, and they tend to sit longer before anyone deals with them — which means by the time they’re retired, you’re often looking at a stack of 5–10 year-old machines that no general waste contractor will touch and no skip-hire firm will legally accept.

Root Communication Limited handles desktop PC recycling for UK businesses, schools, NHS trusts and public-sector teams. Free collection, certified data destruction, refurbishment of working units where there’s resale value, and full WEEE-compliant material recovery for the rest. We handle the monitors, keyboards, mice and cables that come with them as part of the same job.

Whether it’s three towers from a small office or a few hundred workstations from a Windows 10 refresh, we make it one phone call and one set of paperwork.

Why Desktop PCs Need Specialist Recycling

A desktop isn’t just a bigger laptop — the recycling considerations are genuinely different:

  • Significant material weight. A typical mid-tower desktop weighs 6–10 kg, with substantial aluminium, steel, copper and circuit-board content. The recoverable material value per unit is higher than a laptop, but only if it’s properly dismantled.
  • The drive is still the data risk. Bigger chassis, same problem: every hard drive or SSD still holds recoverable data that needs certified destruction before anything else happens.
  • Monitors come with them. Most desktop disposals include the monitor (and often keyboard, mouse, cables, speakers). LCD and OLED monitors contain elements that legally cannot go to landfill; older CRT monitors are classified as hazardous waste and need specific handling.
  • PSU capacitors hold charge. Power supply units in desktops can retain dangerous electrical charge after disconnection — they need to be discharged before dismantling.
  • Component value is high. Working RAM, GPUs, optical drives, PSUs and chassis fans have a strong secondary market for repair and refurbishment. Specialist recycling captures this; general recycling doesn’t.
  • CRT and legacy machines. Many UK organisations still have CRT-era PCs in storerooms. These contain lead, phosphors and other hazardous materials and must be processed through licensed treatment routes.

This isn’t a job for the council bulky-waste service. It’s specialist work — and it’s the work we do.

Desktop Form Factors We Handle

Every type of desktop computer used in UK business and education:

  • Tower desktops — standard ATX towers, mid-tower, full-tower
  • Small form factor (SFF) — Dell OptiPlex SFF, HP EliteDesk SFF, Lenovo ThinkCentre SFF
  • Micro / mini PCs — Intel NUC, Mac mini, HP Mini, Lenovo Tiny
  • All-in-one PCs (AIOs) — iMac, HP EliteOne, Lenovo ThinkCentre AIO, Dell OptiPlex AIO (have integrated displays — recycled as a single unit)
  • Workstations — Dell Precision, HP Z-series, Lenovo ThinkStation, Apple Mac Pro
  • Mini-ITX and custom builds
  • Legacy desktops — including pre-2010 PCs, Pentium-era machines and CRT-era systems

We also collect the peripherals that come with them: monitors (LCD, LED, OLED and legacy CRTs), keyboards, mice, webcams, speakers, docking stations, KVM switches, cables, power leads and surge protectors.

For wider equipment categories see our Items We Collect page. For laptops, servers and infrastructure see our Laptop Recycling, Bulk Laptop Disposal and IT Recycling services.

The Windows 10 End-of-Support Refresh — Still a Live Issue

Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. For most UK businesses, that decision triggered (or is still triggering) a desktop refresh — either because the hardware doesn’t meet Windows 11 requirements (TPM 2.0, secure boot, compatible CPU), or because IT teams chose to refresh hardware alongside the OS upgrade.

If you’re still working through a Windows 10 desktop refresh in 2026, the resulting fleet of retired desktops is typically:

  • 5–7 years old by the time it leaves your business — past laptop refresh age, but normal for desktops
  • Below Windows 11 hardware requirements in most cases — limiting straight resale, but with strong component-harvest value
  • Mixed with monitors, peripherals and accessories built up over the same period

We handle these refreshes as a single managed disposal — towers, monitors and peripherals collected together, data destroyed, working components harvested, and the rest material-recovered. Where any desktops or monitors still have resale value (newer SFFs, recent all-in-ones, premium displays), we route them through our Resale & Remarketing channel and rebate a share of the value back.

For higher-volume Windows 10 refreshes (50+ desktops), combine this with our Bulk Laptop Disposal and IT Disposal for Business services for one project covering the whole estate.

What’s Included in Our Desktop PC Recycling Service

Free UK collection. Vetted, uniformed drivers collect from any UK address using GPS-tracked vehicles. No charge for standard business loads.

Heavy-lift handling at collection. Towers and workstations are heavier than they look — our team handles the lifting, including up and down stairs, out of cupboards and from under desks.

Certified data sanitisation. Every drive (HDD or SSD) is sanitised before the desktop enters the resale or recycling stream. Software erasure to NIST SP 800-88 for working drives being remarketed; physical shredding to DIN 66399 for sensitive or non-functional drives. See our Secure Data Destruction and Data Shredding pages.

Component harvesting. Where the whole desktop has limited resale value but contains working RAM, GPU, PSU, optical drive, fans or other reusable components, we harvest them for the parts and repair market.

Refurbishment of working units. Desktops with resale value (typically newer SFFs, premium workstations, recent all-in-ones, Apple desktops) are wiped, tested, cleaned and routed through our Resale & Remarketing channel — a share of the recovered value rebated to you.

Material recovery on the rest. End-of-life desktops are dismantled at our Manchester facility: aluminium chassis, copper wiring, steel frames, plastics, glass and circuit boards separated and routed to licensed downstream recyclers under the WEEE Regulations 2013.

Safe handling of legacy hardware. CRT monitors and old desktops with hazardous components are handled under Hazardous Waste consignment notes and treated at licensed facilities.

Full documentation pack. Waste Transfer Note at collection, Certificate of Destruction for every drive (by serial number), Certificate of Recycling, asset list and an optional environmental impact summary.

How Our Desktop PC Recycling Process Works

1. Book the collection. Submit a rough count (towers, all-in-ones, monitors, etc.) and your address through the booking form, or call us. No detailed inventory needed at this stage.

2. Confirmation. We confirm the collection is free for your load, agree access requirements (parking, stairs, lift, loading bay), and book a window.

3. Collection. Our team arrives in a GPS-tracked vehicle, handles the lifting, scans and logs every unit by serial number, and you sign the Waste Transfer Note.

4. Triage at our facility. Each desktop is sorted: working (route to refurbishment), component-harvest (working parts salvaged), end-of-life (route to material recovery).

5. Data destruction. Every drive is wiped or shredded before any further handling. Per-drive Certificate of Destruction generated.

6. Refurbishment, harvesting or dismantling. Working units are cleaned, tested, refurbished and prepared for resale. Component-harvest units have reusable parts removed. End-of-life chassis are dismantled and material-recovered.

7. Documentation. Your audit pack sent within working days of processing.

What’s Inside a Desktop — and Where It Goes

The material-recovery story is one place desktops actually outperform laptops. A typical retired mid-tower contains:

  • 2–4 kg of steel — chassis, frame, drive cages — fully recyclable
  • 0.5–1.5 kg of aluminium — heat sinks, premium chassis panels — high-value recycle
  • 150–400 g of copper — wiring, motherboard traces, cooling
  • Circuit boards — recoverable gold, silver, palladium, tantalum
  • Plastics — case panels, fan blades, cable insulation — sorted by polymer type
  • Glass (on monitors) — recovered and separated from frame materials
  • PSU components — transformers and capacitors with their own recovery streams
  • HDD platters — aluminium and rare-earth content recovered post-shredding

Every customer receives a material-recovery summary alongside their certificates: weights recovered by material type, CO₂ avoided through reuse and recycling, equivalent landfill diverted. Reporting your ESG, sustainability and procurement teams can put directly into annual reports and supplier disclosures.

For the wider environmental compliance framework, see Computer Recycling & WEEE Recycling.

Your Data Destroyed Before the Desktop Goes Anywhere

Same principle as every other device class: destroy the data first, deal with the hardware second. The data risk is the drive, not the chassis.

Our workflow:

  • Asset-level scanning at collection — every desktop logged by serial number on pickup
  • Drives sanitised before any further handling — wiped to NIST SP 800-88 or shredded to DIN 66399
  • Serial-numbered certificate per drive — the evidence your auditor or DPO will request
  • Chain of custody from your door to ours — GPS-tracked, sealed transport, no co-mingled loads
  • Lockable, CCTV-monitored holding at our facility between arrival and processing

The methods and standards in full are covered on our Secure Data Destruction page.

FAQs

Is desktop PC recycling really free? For most UK business loads, yes — collection, data destruction and recycling are free of charge. Where desktops have resale value (newer SFFs, premium all-in-ones, workstations, Apple desktops), we rebate a share of the recovered value. Very small loads in remote postcodes may carry a small handling fee, always quoted up front.

Will you also take the monitors, keyboards and cables that go with them? Yes — and you should send them with the desktops. Monitors, keyboards, mice, speakers, cables and power leads are all handled as part of the same collection at no additional charge. Bundling them keeps the project simple and the recycling consolidated.

What about CRT (old tube) monitors and legacy PCs? We collect them and handle them properly. CRT monitors are classified as hazardous waste because of their lead and phosphor content, and they need to be processed through licensed treatment under Hazardous Waste consignment. We arrange this as part of the collection — no extra paperwork for you.

What happens to the data on my old desktops? Every drive (HDD or SSD) is sanitised before the desktop enters the refurbishment or recycling stream. Software erasure to NIST SP 800-88 for working drives, physical shredding to DIN 66399 for sensitive or end-of-life drives. You receive a Certificate of Destruction for every drive by serial number.

My desktops are 5+ years old and won’t run Windows 11 — are they worth anything? Sometimes a small amount, but more often the value comes from component harvesting (RAM, GPU, PSU, optical drives) and material recovery (aluminium, copper, steel). Even if the per-unit rebate is modest, the recycling is still free and the audit trail is still complete — which is the more important outcome for most businesses.

Can you handle workstations and high-spec PCs? Yes — and these typically hold the best resale value of any desktop category. Dell Precision, HP Z-series, Lenovo ThinkStation, Mac Pro and Mac Studio desktops are in strong demand on the secondary market. Send us specs and we’ll give you an indicative rebate before collection.

What about all-in-one PCs like iMacs? All-in-ones are recycled as a single integrated unit — the display can’t be separated from the computing hardware. iMacs and recent business all-in-ones (HP EliteOne, Lenovo ThinkCentre AIO) usually retain meaningful resale value through our Resale & Remarketing channel.

Will you collect from upstairs offices or restricted-access locations? Yes — desktops are heavy but our team handles the lifting. We do appreciate knowing about stairs, lift access, parking restrictions or out-of-hours requirements at booking, so we can send the right number of people and the right vehicle.

Are you GDPR-compliant? Yes. We operate as a documented Article 28 data processor under UK GDPR. Every drive is destroyed to a recognised standard and you receive serial-numbered certificates closing the audit loop. Full compliance framework on our IT Asset Disposal page.

Do you cover the whole UK? Yes — mainland UK including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol and surrounding regions. Highland, island and Northern Ireland collections are arranged on request.
